The death of Katie and Nel and the causes behind it form the crux of the story, with themes like rape, incest, extra-marital affairs and pedophilia forming important plot points. Since Libby, many âtroublesomeâ women have lost their lives in the water over the years, including 15 year old Katie who was also Lenaâs best friend and two months later, Nel herself. Due to her âcrimesâ and the fact that this happened in the 17th Century, Libby was subsequently drowned into the river by the people of the village. The mystery of the water began from the 1600âs when a 14 year old Libby was accused of being a witch and seducing a married man.

From the beginning, weâre given glimpses of Nel and Juliaâs uneasy relationship since childhood and Nelâs obsession with the aforementioned Drowning Pool. Her younger sister, Jules aka Julia comes back from London to the said town as sheâs the only living family member of Nelâs 15 year old daughter Lena, who constantly reminds Jules of her dead sister. Touted as a creepy, psychological suspense, Into The Water is a story about Nel Abott, a single mother who dies at the bottom of a river (called The Drowning Pool) which runs through the small town called Beckford. Anyway, why am I ranting about Paulaâs debut when itâs her second novel â Into The Water I actually want to write about? Letâs move on. The Girl On The Train, while a solid book in itâs own right, has none of the complications or game-changing plot points Flynnâs work consists of. Gone Girl is a brilliant critique on the dynamics between men and women, the after effects of the 2008 recession, the pressure on the female gender to be the âcool girlâ and a completely horrible (yet âamazingâ) female lead. Her debut novel, The Girl On The Train which went on to become one of the biggest bestsellers in 2015 and a successful film with an A-list starcast in 2016 was called by many websites, the next Gone Girl.

I totally bought into the hype of Paula Hawkins being the ânext Gillian Flynnâ.
